Scottish Setter might have been a more obvious name for the breed, given its British siblings, but it was named after the father of the breed, the Duke of Gordon, who enthusiastically bred his black and tan setters in Aberdeen without ever publishing details of any of the breeds he employed in his program.

Gordon Setters are intelligent, able and dignified dogs that are bold, sociable, gentle-natured and calm.

 

Gordon Setter In a few words :

  • Head

    Deep rather than broad, muzzle shorter than the length of the skull, because the distance from occiput to stop is greater than from stop to nose.

     

     
  • Body

    Medium length with broad, slightly arched loins, well descended chest that is not too broad, well sprung ribs, deep at the back.

     

     
  • Coat

    Deep, shining coal black, without rustiness, with tan (chestnut red) markings. Black penciling on toes and black streak under jaw.

     

     
  • Ears

    Medium-sized, lean, set low, close to the head.

     

     
  • Tail

    Straight or slightly scimitar-shaped, never reaching past the hock, carried level or below the topline.

     

     
  • Hair

    Short and fine on head, front of the legs and tips of the ears; medium length, flat elsewhere, without curling or waviness.

     

     

This stylish breed is a real galloper, built as it is like a field hunter, a horse that can carry a lot of weight. Gordon Setters must be harmoniously built throughout.
