Sussex Spaniels are powerful dogs that have been bred since the early 19th century, thanks in no small part to Augustus Fuller, who selected the best qualities for more than half a century. Nowadays, though, Sussex spaniels are classified as a Vulnerable British Breed.

Sussex Spaniels possess a natural working ability, giving tongue in dense cover. Good natured with humans and other dogs alike, members of this breed should never become aggressive at any time.

 

Sussex Spaniel In a few words :

  • Head

    Well balanced, with broad skull curving moderately between the ears; neither flat nor apple-headed.

     

     
  • Body

    Strong, level from withers to hips, with no sign of waistlines.

     

     
  • Coat

    Rich golden liver, shading to golden at the tip.

     

     
  • Ears

    Thick, fairly large, lobular, set moderately low just over eye level.

     

     
  • Tail

    Gradually tapering to the tip, moderate feathering.

    Abundant and flat, with no tendency to curl, with ample undercoat for weather resistance.

     

     

Sussex Spaniels are solidly built, active and energetic dogs with a distinctive rolling gait that is unlike that of any other spaniel. A star in the fields or the show rings, with excellent behavioral characteristics for a companion dog.
